Embark on a 4-day adventure to the summit of Mount Mgoun (4,068m), one of Morocco’s most iconic High Atlas peaks. This trek begins in the Ait Bouguemez Valley, also known as the “Happy Valley,” and follows trails through traditional Berber villages, wild highlands, and scenic plateaus. Along the way, encounter nomadic communities and enjoy panoramic views of Morocco’s varied landscapes, from verdant valleys to the arid vistas of the Sahara in the distance.
Highlights of the 4-Day Mgoun Summit Trek
Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Marrakech – Ait Bouguemez Valley – Azib n’Ikkis (2,300m)
Depart Marrakech and transfer via Azilal into the central High Atlas, entering the Ait Bouguemez Valley. Begin trekking through traditional Berber villages in the scenic Arous Valley, ending the day at the Azib n’Ikkis pastures.
Day 2: Azib n’Ikkis (2,300m) – Tizi n’Oughri Pass (3,400m) – Tarkeddit Plateau (2,900m) Ascend a mule trail to the Tizi n’Oughri Pass for sweeping views of the Mgoun Range. Descend to the Tarkeddit Plateau for an afternoon of rest by the Tassaout spring.
Day 3: Tarkeddit Plateau – Mgoun Summit (4,068m) – Oulilimt (2,700m)
Start early for the summit ascent. Follow the Mgoun Ridge to reach the peak and take in views across the Dades Valley and Sarhro Massif. Descend via a steep valley to camp at Oulilimt.
Day 4: Oulilimt (2,700m) – Ait Imi Pass (2,905m) – Ait Bouguemez Valley – Marrakech Climb to the Ait Imi Pass for final views over the Atlas, then descend to the Ait Bouguemez Valley. Enjoy a farewell lunch with the muleteer team before transferring back to Marrakech.
